Welcome to Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) Northern Ireland
HIGHLIGHT: Elder abuse is a crime, but it isn’t treated like one. If you think this is wrong then join our campaign for a new law. Click here.
On 15th June 2016 AEA launched a campaign to introduce a new aggravated offence of elder abuse. We published a detailed report outlining the failure of the current criminal justice system to adequately prosecute perpetrators of abuse, and the extent of lenient sentencing if such cases do reach the courts system. There are thousands of abuse crimes perpetrated against older people in the UK each year, and the majority never achieve justice. This needs to change. Please support our campaign.
AEA Northern Ireland works to prevent the abuse of older people and by doing so we also protect other adults at risk of abuse. We are a specialist organisation, focusing exclusively on the issue of elder abuse; not as one issue among many, but as a single focus to our work. We therefore have extensive expertise that is not available from any other charity or agency.
AEA Northern Ireland is part of the UK-wide organisation, Action on Elder Abuse, who were the first charity to address elder abuse and the only charity in the UK and Ireland working exclusively on this issue today. Find out more about what AEA does here.
AEA Northern Ireland provides a tailored service to older people, their families, carers and practitioners. Our work is in line with the Northern Ireland adult safeguarding and protection agenda, taking an inclusive and partnership approach as much as possible.
