Action on Elder Abuse
Welcome to our website
Who we are:
Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) works to protect, and prevent the abuse
of, vulnerable older adults. We were the first charity to address
these problems and are the only charity in the UK and in Ireland working
exclusively on the issue today. Consequently,
when you provide support to us, or make a donation, you can be sure that it will be
used exclusively on issues relating to elder abuse and nothing else. Our work is fundamental to challenging elder abuse in the UK
and we constantly need financial support to continue our
activities. Although we are as effective as many of the bigger
charities, we receive only a fraction of their income. Help us
continue to make a difference. There are a variety of options on the right for making donations to us,
or click on the 'Support us/Make a Donation' link on your left to find
out more. Together we can end elder abuse.
We moved office on 1
July 2009 to bright new premises in Streatham, London SW16. And it
is taking slightly longer than we hoped to get our systems are up and running,
so please bear with us. We hope to have everything online
shortly...and then we can start receiving emails once more.
The helpline however is unaffected by all this,
so continue to contact or refer as appropriate.
Project Work: Comic Relief funded
projects
Unfortunately we have had to (temporarily)
suspend the four projects funded by Comic Relief. These
include work on the Survivors Network, the Good Practice database,
work with the Alzheimer's Society, and the Good Practice guidance
for Care Homes. Due to factors beyond our control there has
been a delay in clearing and receiving the funding from Comic
Relief. We hope to have this resolved quickly but in the
meantime, if this causes you any concern, please contact our Policy
Manager Daniel Blake who will endeavour to assist you. To find
out more about these projects click here.
Margaret Haywood
The appalling decision by the Nursing and
Midwifery Council to strike Margaret Haywood from the register of
nurses, as a consequence of her cooperation with Panorama, has been
rightly criticised by numerous individuals and organisations.
Her actions uncovered dreadful neglect and poor care of older people
on an NHS ward, and also highlighted the failure of whistleblowing
and complaints procedures to encourage other nurses to come forward
and speak out. Click here to

The
Safeguarding Adults Alliance
brings together key organisations, including
Mencap,
Action on Elder Abuse, Alzheimer’s Society, the United Kingdom Home
Care Association, Action for Advocacy, Irwin Mitchell solicitors, the
School of Social and Health Care at Bournemouth University, Age Concern
North Staffordshire, PAVA and the Beth Johnson Foundation.
Fifty three other organisations are associated members of the
Alliance, together with a further six hundred and twenty one individuals.

CONFERENCE:
Personalisation and Safeguarding conference
20 July 2009, Bloomsbury Hotel,
London
The
way in which social care services are being delivered is undergoing a tremendous transformation following the launch of the
‘Putting People First’ concordat. The ‘personalisation’
agenda, which seeks to give choice
and control to those people using services and their families, is the
cornerstone
of government policy and is intended to impact upon the care received by
thousands
of people.
Safeguarding is arguably enjoying its highest profile since the launch
of The No Secrets guidance in 2000. A ‘once in a generation’
review of the No Secrets guidance has been recently completed, and accountability for safeguarding
work
undertaken by local authorities has been subject to thematic review from CSCI.
However, as these agendas move forward, a number of taxing questions and
debates remain. Read more and obtain a full programme and booking form
by clicking here.

Legislation to protect Older
People and other Adults at risk of abuse...

The Government has challenged us all to justify why we need
legislation to protect adults at risk of abuse,
and we are throwing the challenge back.
Right now we have laws to protect our animals but not our old
people. Can this be right? Read why this is happening, and join our campaign for
