A one day conference to explore the nature and extent of financial abuse of older people.

This event has now passed.



The conference will run from 9am to 4pm on the 21st November 2016.

The conference will include a combination of presentations, a panel discussion and interactive workshops. Our Conference Chair is Dr Margaret Flynn, Chair of the National Independent Safeguarding Board.


Presentations will be made by:

Sarah Rochira, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales


Ian Thomas, Chief Executive Officer, Age Cymru
Ian will be outlining the work of the Wales Against Scams Partnership.

Tony Neate, CEO, Get Safe Online
Tony will be exploring how to protect older people from fraud and theft online.

Gary FitzGerald, Chief Executive, Action on Elder Abuse


Panel discussion examining ways to safeguard older people from financial abuse including representatives from:

Crown Prosecution Service
Office of the Public Guardian
Trading Standards
The Police

Workshops topics will include:

Understanding the nature of financial abuse, its perpetrators and victims: Gary FitzGerald, CEO, AEA
Supporting victims of financial elder abuse via Advocacy: Gail Gordon, Age Cymru Gwent
Using the Social Services and Well-being Act to safeguard older people from financial abuse: Louisa Laurent, Safeguarding Lead, Greater Gwent Transformation Team, Torfaen Council


Who is the conference relevant for?

The conference is aimed at anyone concerned about the financial abuse of older people, those who work with or support older people, and those with an interest in developing understanding of the issue, including:

· The voluntary, community and faith sector

· Health professionals

· The police

· Health and social care

· The financial sector

· Older people and carers



The conference will be held in the Council Chamber of City Hall, Cardiff. City Hall is situated in the heart of Cardiff, with the central train and bus stations a few minutes’ walk away.
